“Under Construction: A Renovation” is the video
installation version of a performative intrusion which
took place on December 9th, 2005 in an incomplete
“E-type” penal complex located in Ayas, Ankara. The
prison construction is started in 1987 and it is
suspended in 1994 due to lack of funds. Today, it can
not be used as a penal institution because of its off-
the-code architectural planning by “contemporary
prison standards”. After endless discussions about
remodeling the buildings into a university / a cultural
center / a dormitory / a hospital, now, the complex
is being (re)considered to be transformed into a
refugee camp.
New York. Studied Civil Engineering (BS) and Gender and
Women Studies (MA) at Middle East Technical University,
Ankara. Worked as a specialist at GISAM, Audio Visual
Research Center at METU, Ankara, where he realized a
number of video and digital works and gave courses. He is
currently the New Media Projects Manager at the New
Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, since year 2000.
He made photo-essays, installations, performances and video
films and held solo shows and group exhibitions. He is one of
the core members of xurban_collective together with
pope (Guven Incirlioglu).

2000, xurban is dedicated to art and politics.
It attempts to motivate/provoke theoretical/political
discussions. Currently situated mainly in New York and
Istanbul, xurban realized site-specific installations, as well as
works that are realized specifically for viewing on the
Internet.

Aujourd’hui la prison ne peut pas être utilisée
comme une institution pénale car ses plans ne
conviennent pas aux standards des prisons
contemporaines. Après d'interminnables discussions
sur le remodelage des bâtiments en université /
centre culturel / dortoir / hôpital, le complexe est
maintenant (ré)considéré pour être transformé en un
camp de refugiés.

films vidéo et a tenu des spectacles en solo et des
expositions en groupe. Il est l’un des membres de base de
xurban collective ensemble avec pape (Guven Incirlioglu).
